MANAGING EDITOR -- The Patterson Irrigator, a twice-weekly newspaper for the city of Patterson, Calif., seeks a managing editor to oversee the paper's staff, write stories, and edit content. Qualified applicants will have at least four years of newspaper experience, knowledge of Associated Press style and a passion for community journalism. Knowledge of the Central Valley is a definite plus. Patterson, a community of about 21,000 people in the northern San Joaquin Valley, was the third-fastest growing city in the state in 2006. It includes an interesting mix of longtime valley residents and young families from other areas, though it maintains its rural heritage. Pleasant day hikes are available in the nearby Del Puerto Canyon. The city is less than two hours from recreation activities in San Francisco and Sacramento and less than three hours from Yosemite National Park. PAGE DESIGNER -- The Bakersfield Californian seeks a page designer to help achieve our goal of turning our cutting edge design into an award-winning section. Candidates must have strong visual design skills, including page layout, graphics and photo selection. Candidates also must have sharp copy-editing skills and a flair for writing accurate, compelling headlines. Applicants should be able to design pages quickly and efficiently using QuarkXPress. Familiarity with Photoshop would be a plus. We cover the ECHL Condors, D-League Jam  and Cal League Blaze, Division I Cal State Bakersfield, Bakersfield College (JC) and 30 high schools. Area rich in current pro athletes, including David Carr, Joey Porter, Kevin Harvick and Casey Mears. Bakersfield also hosts the nationšs largest single-class state prep wrestling tournament in March, along with many local auto and drag racing events.
